Valentine's Day Feature

Is Black the New Pink?

Most people view today as the opportunity to romantically express their true feelings for a loved one, the rest of the population (the cynics) view Valentine’s Day as nothing more than a “Hallmark Holiday” created solely to sell greeting cards, flowers, and chocolate.  According to the Greeting Card Association, there are more than 3,000 greeting card publishers in the United States, ranging from individual studios to major corporations, all of which depend heavily on Valentine’s Day for a large amount of their profit. However, these companies may be disappointed this year since there are many individuals who appear to be boycotting the holiday altogether.

All over SUNY Albany ‘s campus today, an array of pinks, reds, magentas, and any other shade of red or pink are seen everywhere. But another popular wardrobe color is black; not very festive now is it? Most of those sporting black today may not have done so on purpose, but a good amount of female students admit to doing it on purpose, and to make a point. “Seeing everyone dolled up in pink and hearts just annoys me,” sophomore Mira Lazaroff says. “I’ve never been a fan of Valentine’s Day, even when I had a boyfriend,” she was quick to add at the end. The common misconception is, if you happen to be single on February 14th then there is either A) something wrong with you, or B) a large amount of hatred and unhappiness spewing from your pores.

Typically, when people think about Valentine’s Day, they automatically think of it as “a girl’s holiday.”  It’s the perfect time to place unrealistically high expectations on your boyfriend that he’s sure not to meet, and let’s be real, we all know at least one girl that this applies to. Junior Jimmy Murphy, another supporter of the black t-shirt trend admits he’s is more than happy to be single on this holiday for that very reason. “If being single means I don’t have to spend the effort, or money on a hallmark holiday, then that’s fine by me.” Hopefully wearing black will ward off the valentine-seeking girls.

But for those who enjoy nothing more then complaining, or whining about how much it sucks to be alone on February 14th need to remember one thing; being alone on Valentine’s Day is no different then being along on any other day of the week… Except that it is fully acceptable to eat your body weight in chocolate, and there isn’t anything wrong with that.

  1. This could be an A with a little rewriting. You don't have to push so hard. for example in the last line -- end with body weight in chocolate, which is funny and we fully get that there's nothing wrong with that. You don't have to add it. And you take too long to get to the point. I think i'd start with the girl in black among all the pink and red. Then backtrack to background you open with.

Dates in AP style you must learn. It would be Feb. 14. No "th" and month abbreviated.
